English version: the interface and Yikonglu's notes are translated; quoted commentary stays in Chinese. The Chinese page is authoritative.

The Analects › Xue er (Book 1)

Xue er (Book 1) · chapter 16Not troubled that others do not know me

子曰:不患人之不己知,患不知人也。
Source text and commentary from Zhu Xi, Lunyu jizhu (Sibu beiyao printing).

The Master said: Do not be troubled that others do not know you; be troubled that you do not know others.

Working English rendering by Yikonglu; the Chinese text above is what counts.

注Key words in the commentary

Yin Tun: “君子求在我者” — the gentleman seeks what lies with himself; “不知人,则是非邪正或不能辨” — if you do not know others, you may fail to tell right from wrong, crooked from straight.

读How Yikonglu reads it

The book opens with “unrecognised and yet not resentful” and closes here; the two ends meet.
