子曰:君子食无求饱,居无求安,敏于事而慎于言,就有道而正焉,可谓好学也已。The Master said: A gentleman does not seek to eat his fill or live in comfort; he is quick in action and careful in speech, and goes to those who have the Way to be set straight. He may be called fond of learning.
注Key words in the commentary
“志有在而不暇及也” — his mind is elsewhere and he has no time for it; “敏于事者,勉其所不足” — quick in action means pushing on where one falls short; “必就有道之人,以正其是非” — one must go to someone who has the Way to have one's right and wrong set straight.
家What other commentators say
Yin Tun cites Yang Zhu and Mozi as “学仁义而差者也” — people who studied ren and yi and went astray.
读How Yikonglu reads it
