一孔录季氏旅于泰山。子谓冉有曰：女弗能救与？对曰：不能。子曰：呜呼！曾谓泰山不如林放乎？The Ji family made the lu sacrifice to Mount Tai. The Master said to Ran You: Could you not save them from this? He replied: I could not. The Master said: Alas! Will it be said that Mount Tai knows less than Lin Fang?

“诸侯祭封内山川，季氏祭之，僭也” — lords sacrifice to the mountains and rivers within their realm; for the Ji to do so was usurpation; Ran You “时为季氏宰” — was then steward of the Ji; “救，谓救其陷于僭窃之罪” — save means save them from falling into the guilt of usurpation; “神不享非礼” — spirits do not accept improper offerings.
