雍也第六 · chapter 11Both are scholars: where is the difference?

子谓子夏曰:女为君子儒,无为小人儒。
Source text and commentary from Zhu Xi, Lunyu jizhu (Sibu beiyao printing).

The Master said to Zixia: Be a scholar of the gentleman's kind, not a scholar of the petty man's kind.

Working English rendering by Yikonglu; the Chinese text above is what counts.

白Plain Chinese

孔子对子夏说:你要做为自己修身的君子儒,不要做做给人看的小人儒。

A plain modern-Chinese rendering following Yikonglu's reading.

常The common reading

Both are men of learning: where is the difference?

注Key words in the commentary

“儒,学者之称” — “ru” is a name for a learned man.

家What other commentators say

Master Cheng: “君子儒为己,小人儒为人” — the gentleman scholar learns for himself; the petty scholar learns for others. Xie: “君子小人之分,义与利之间而已……虽有及人之功,而不害其为己” — the division between gentleman and petty man lies only between rightness and profit … though his work may benefit others, it does not stop it being for himself; “子夏文学虽有余,然意其远者大者或昧焉,故夫子语之以此” — Zixia had learning to spare, but perhaps was unclear about what is far-reaching and great, so the Master told him this.

读How Yikonglu reads it

Studying the same books, one who learns to make something of himself is a gentleman scholar; one who learns to be seen and to gain advantage is a petty scholar. Profit is not only money; reputation counts too.

家Other commentaries

Our base text is Zhu Xi's Collected Commentaries (above). Here are other commentaries side by side: for old commentaries, the first line of the sub-commentary with a link to the woodblock scan; for modern editions, one short quoted translation for comparison. The “compared with Zhu Xi” notes are written by Yikonglu, not quoted.
